Trezor.io/Start — Official Setup Guide
Follow these safe, step-by-step instructions to set up your Trezor hardware wallet and secure your crypto.
Before you start — what you need
- Your Trezor device (Model One or Model T) and the cable included in the box.
- A desktop or laptop computer (recommended) or a supported mobile device.
- A secure, private workspace — you will write down your recovery seed by hand.
What’s in the box
- Trezor hardware device
- USB cable
- Recovery seed cards / instruction leaflet
- Tamper-evident packaging (verify seal)
Safety first
Never share your recovery seed (the list of words) with anyone. Trezor team will never ask for it. Keep the seed offline and stored securely.
1) Download Trezor Suite or visit Trezor Web
Use the official Trezor software to initialize and manage your device. Download only from the official site or use the official web app.
- Open your browser and go to
trezor.io/start
(or the official downloads page). - Download Trezor Suite for your operating system (Windows / macOS / Linux) or use the web interface when available.
- Install the app and open it. If prompted to install Trezor Bridge, follow the official instructions in the app.
Use a freshly installed browser profile if you're concerned about browser extensions or malware on your system.
2) Connect the device & update firmware
- Connect the Trezor to your computer with the supplied cable.
- The device screen should light up and display a welcome message.
- In Trezor Suite, the app will detect your device. If a firmware update is required, the app will recommend you update now — accept and follow on-screen instructions.
Important: Only allow firmware updates that come directly through the official Trezor app. Do not accept firmware from unknown sources.
3) Initialize your wallet (create a new wallet)
- Choose Create new wallet in the app when prompted.
- Pick a descriptive device label (optional) to differentiate multiple devices.
- Set a device PIN using the on-device screen. Use a PIN you can remember but that is not easily guessable.
- The device will generate your recovery seed (typically 12, 18 or 24 words depending on model/settings).
- Write each recovery word exactly as shown on the supplied recovery card; never store the seed digitally (no photos, no cloud). Keep the seed in a safe place (e.g., a safe, secure deposit box, or metal backup plate).
Trezor may ask you to confirm a few random words on the device or the app to verify you wrote them down correctly — complete this verification before continuing.
4) Add cryptocurrency accounts & receive funds
- In Trezor Suite, select Add account and choose the cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).
- Trezor Suite will derive addresses for that coin from your device — use the receive address shown in the app and confirm it on the device screen.
- To receive funds, share only the public receive address. Never share private keys or your recovery seed.
For some coins or tokens, you may need to enable third-party integrations (WalletConnect, web3) — always review permissions before approving.
Security best practices
- Keep your recovery seed offline and in multiple secure locations if needed.
- Use a strong PIN and enable passphrase encryption only if you understand how it works (passphrases are an advanced feature — losing it means losing access).
- Never type your recovery seed into a computer or phone.
- Only use official Trezor Suite or verified partner integrations.
- Regularly check for official firmware and app updates and apply them from the official sources.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
My device isn’t detected
- Try a different USB cable or port (some cables are power-only).
- Restart your computer and reopen Trezor Suite.
- Check that you downloaded the official suite and, if required, installed Trezor Bridge.
I lost my recovery seed — what now?
If you lose your recovery seed and you still have access to the device (and funds), create a new wallet and back up the new seed immediately. If you lose both the device and the seed, funds cannot be recovered.
Can Trezor be hacked?
When used correctly (secure seed storage, official software, offline seed), a hardware wallet like Trezor greatly reduces risk compared to software wallets. Social engineering and compromised hosts are still real threats — always follow best practices.
